Passed away September, 2004
Jim was an accomplished musician, mostly playing string bass and electric bass in Seattle-area jazz combos with Walt Wagner Trio, Jack Brownlow, et. al., at venues like Olympic Hotel, Canlis, various other restaurants and yacht clubs. After RHS, he attended jr college in Wenatchee, transferred to UW and received a BS in Pharmacy in 1966, which provided a "day job" for a few years until becoming established in the Seattle music scene. He did some world travel with the Peggy Fleming Ice Show band in the late 60’s. Health issues developing in the 80’s limited his activities after that. He was never married, no children, and passed away in September 2004. Don Anderson (Jim's Brother & RHS Class of '54)
What a kidder! He was a good fellow. Good sense of humor. After I left Roosevelt, our senior year, I attended Aquinas Academy in Tacoma. I was very surprised to see Jim playing music at one of our proms. Small world. Clasini Haley

Bert entered Roosevelt in his senior year with the Class of '59. He was the very tall, thin guy with the exceptionally professional voice and great sense of humor. In fact, by high school, Bert was a paid radio announcer and within a few years had permanent shifts on radio stations KIRO, KOMO, KVI and Marketcasters. He was recruited into television sales by KIRO-TV (CBS) and rapidly rose from account executive to sales manager, to regional manager and then Assistant Station Manager. He was a consumate manager of people and in creating an enriching, fun-filled work environment for all. Bert retired early to travel and enjoy life and family. He and wife, Robin, traveled the world many times over with their three children.
Bert was a tireless volunteer at Childhaven and an active supporter of child advocacy issues.
Bert passed away in October, 2007, from ALS. His story was featured on ABC's Good Morning America and can be seen by entering Bert's name on YouTube.

Sandy passed away a few years ago of ALS. She had lived in Little Rock and Vermont where she had a business making greeting cards that many will have remembered (Coyote and the Cactus Eared Rabbit in highly stylized Western deserts and mountains). She created really great art, was a businesswoman on chambers of commerce committees, she hired the poor and disabled and was a bit of a social worker. She had been Bob Melton's girlfriend in our senior year at Roosevelt and remained a good friend of both Bob and I over the years. Her memorial services were at Reed College in Portland where she had graduated. The service was attended by many from all over the country and particularly from the arts community. She was a great person and a good friend, and we miss her. Charles Huffine
Sandra passed away in Portland, Oregon, in 2001. Sandy died of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and left behind her husband, Mel Gullikson, daughter, Caressa, and son, Jordan, all of Oregon. Sandy transferred from school in Vermont into Roosevelt for her senior year as part of the class of '59. She was a graduate of Reed College and was nationally known for her artwork, greeting cards and for her warm and generous spirit. Robert Melton

Steve Sperlin Ski Team Roll Rep. Intra. Sports Lab Writer Staff
Passed away in 1990
Our classmate, Steve Sperlin, died in 1990 at the age of 49. He had three adopted sons. All were 6 and under whenSteve married their mother, Dawn. Together, they later adopted a little girl. His widow lives in Reno.
Steve's career had taken him from dealing in the casinos at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he had risen to upper-management at the first big casino there. He and his wife had been in New Jersey probably 12 years when South Dakota legalized gambling. They and another couple put together all their life savings and launched a small hometown style casino at Deadwood early in 1990. They catered to the RV crowd, and had a wonderful lunch counter and home-style bakery in the mix which served lunches for juries and employees at the courthouse across the street. In September of that year, a young man stationed at a nearby Air Base over-extended himself gambling and returned late at night to retrieve the bad checks he had written. Steve was shot to death while closing that night.
One of Steve's major loves was golf. He made trips to Portugal and other foreign places to play golf, and even began to experiment with making his own clubs.
Steve was a very easy going guy and everyone who knew him liked him. David Gilmartin

John was an uncontainable bohemian spirit and genuine intellectual whose great loves were classical music, pure stereo sound, yoga, and his family. He died of a heart attack, leaving behind his ex-wife and best friend of forty years and their twin daughters, remarkably lovely and talented Renaissance women of whom he was duly proud.
